Fishing permits and rules in Mongolia: what visitors need to know

Fishing in Mongolia is regulated, and rules are enforced more often than many visitors expect. Here is what you need to know before you cast.

Permits

Anglers need a fishing licence, usually issued through the provincial or district environmental office. If you travel with an outfitter, permits are normally arranged for you — ask to see them.

Protected species

Taimen are protected and must be released unharmed. Some rivers and stretches are fully closed or are managed as catch-and-release conservation areas.

Seasonal closure

A spring closure protects spawning fish. Dates can vary by region, so confirm them locally.

National parks

Places like Lake Khuvsgul require a park entrance fee in addition to a fishing permit, and some zones are off-limits to fishing.

Good practice

• Use barbless single hooks
• Carry your permit and passport
• Never use nets, explosives or live bait from other waters
