Getting around Mongolia: jeeps, vans and domestic flights

Mongolia is huge and sparsely populated. Getting to good fishing is usually half the adventure.

Domestic flights

Regional flights connect Ulaanbaatar with provincial centres such as Mörön. They save days of driving, but schedules change and baggage limits are strict — check the allowance for rod tubes.

The UAZ “furgon”

The grey Russian van is the workhorse of the countryside. It is not comfortable, but it goes almost anywhere and every rural mechanic can fix it.

Land Cruisers and 4×4s

More comfortable and faster on good tracks. Most tour companies offer them with a driver.

Road tips

  • Hire a driver, not just a car — tracks are unmarked and often split into dozens of paths.
  • Expect 30–50 km/h average on dirt roads.
  • Carry water, snacks and a warm layer in the vehicle at all times.
