Mouse fishing for taimen: how to skate a fly at dusk

Taimen eat rodents that swim across rivers at night. A deer-hair or foam “mouse” skated across the surface imitates them — and the resulting strike is unforgettable.

Rigging

• 8–10 weight rod with a floating line
• A short, strong leader (1–1.5 m of 0.5 mm / 30 lb fluorocarbon or mono)
• A single barbless hook, size 1/0–3/0

The swing

Cast across and slightly downstream, then let the current swing the fly while you add short, steady strips. The fly should push a V-wake, like a small animal swimming.

Don’t strike too early

The hardest part is doing nothing. Wait until you feel the weight of the fish, then set the hook with a firm strip — not by lifting the rod.

Taimen often miss on the first attack. Keep the fly moving; they frequently come back.

Best times

The last hour before dark and the first hour after dawn, especially in September.
